Work through each lesson and mark the module complete when you finish practising.

7.1 What to do when time is running out

Prioritize unanswered questions. Points are not deducted for incorrect answers, so it is worth answering every question.

If you are unsure, eliminate the options you can rule out and choose the best-supported answer. If time remains within the same part, review the relevant passage. Change an answer when you find a specific reason in the text.

Before moving on, confirm that your choice has been recorded. You cannot return to a previous part.

7.2 Checklist before finishing a part

  • I answered every question and checked my selections.
  • I answered what was asked: main idea, detail, or inference.
  • I identified the evidence supporting my answers.
  • I checked who expresses each opinion.
  • I checked quantities, dates, comparisons, and conditions.
  • I did not choose an option only because it repeats words from the text.
  • If I chose E, I checked that the requested information is not given.

For an inference, the evidence may be spread across several sentences. There does not need to be a sentence identical to the answer.

7.3 Learn from every mistake

After an exercise, record what you chose, which evidence you overlooked, and what you will practise next.

My choiceEvidence I overlookedNext action
I chose an option saying all employees. The text limited the benefit to one group.Check the scope of each option.
I chose E because I could not find the same word. The paragraph expressed the idea through a paraphrase.Look for equivalent meanings.
I compared the train and the bus.The question compared the train and the plane.Identify both items before calculating.

You can first practise without a timer so you can justify every answer. Then repeat the method with a new exercise and the reference time for that part.

Repeating the same exercise helps you understand the mistake. A new text lets you check whether you have learned to apply the strategy.

Mini-test

Review your strategy

Mark each statement true or false.

  1. If I cannot find a statement on my first read, I should automatically choose E.
  2. An option sharing words with the text can still change its meaning.
  3. When time is running out, I should answer the remaining questions even if some choices are uncertain.
Show answers

1: False. Check whether the information appears in the relevant passage or through a paraphrase.

2: True. Review the complete meaning, not just repeated words.

3: True. There is no deduction for incorrect answers. Eliminate options when you can, and avoid leaving answers blank.
