CELPIP Scores and CLB Levels
Understand how each skill is scored and what your result means for the application you are preparing.
CELPIP General reports a separate result for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. One skill cannot make up for a shortfall in another. Always check the minimum level for your specific program.
3.1 CELPIP and CLB
For tests accepted by IRCC, each numerical CELPIP level from 1 to 12 corresponds to the same Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level. For example, CELPIP 9 corresponds to CLB 9 in that skill. This applies separately to all four skills.
IRCC publishes the accepted tests and score equivalencies . Express Entry accepts CELPIP General, whereas General LS does not test all four skills.
3.2 Why aim for CLB 9?
CLB 9 or higher in all four skills may qualify you for higher skill-transferability points in the Comprehensive Ranking System. The actual increase also depends on education, work experience, and other factors. CLB 9 does not guarantee a fixed number of points or an invitation.

3.3 How the sections are assessed
Listening and Reading
Answers are marked correct or incorrect. The test may include unscored items that are not identified to candidates, so give every question your full attention.
Writing and Speaking
Trained human raters assess responses using published criteria such as content, coherence, vocabulary, and comprehensibility. Practice with the rubric instead of assuming an automatic formula.
CELPIP explains its test format and scoring . Tables converting raw correct answers to levels are only indicative because test forms can differ.
