CELPIP Writing fundamentals
Understand the tasks, assessment criteria, audience, and purpose before you write.
Work through each lesson and mark the module complete when you finish practising.
Understand the writing task
Writing has two tasks: an email and a response to a survey. Read the instructions on your screen for the time and word range. The goal is to communicate a complete, relevant message in everyday or workplace situations.
Before writing, identify four things: the situation, your purpose, your reader, and every required point. A complaint to a manager and advice to a friend need different language, even when they describe the same problem.
Turn each requested point into a short planning note. Do not copy the instructions into your response. Decide what you need to explain and which detail will make it clear.
Write for the assessment criteria
Content and coherence: organize your ideas and support them with relevant details. Vocabulary: choose accurate, varied language that fits the situation. Readability: use paragraphs, clear sentences, correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Task fulfillment: answer the whole prompt with an appropriate tone and length.
A sophisticated word cannot replace a missing answer. Review the task first, then improve expression. For example, if a complaint asks for the problem, its effect, and a solution, your reader should be able to locate all three.
